Re: Any news on the dollar coins?
i have a question......
for 2000, 2003, and 2005, i see some kennedy half dollar coins being sold on ebay with the S mint mark. some sellers say this proof coin is 90% silver but from some online sites i see it is only 40% silver. whats the truth of the silver content for 2000, 2003, 2005 s mint proof kennedy coins? |

That is the link to the US mint site, but from them unless you have a friendly dealer, most times it's cheaper than a dealer and ebay direct from the site. |

Yes, there will be proofs sold. I believe it will be similar to how the state quarters are sold (proof sets, and complete year coin sets with 4 pres per year). I am not too excited about them as they will have the same metal content as the Sacagawea golden dollar, so nothing special, unless golden sacs float your boat. Hey, JSon: Follow Cb's advice, your question will get lost in this thread too. But to answer your question, if the Kennedy half dollar came from the silver proof set, then it will have 90% silver just like the 1964 circulated mint version. The Great Ag |

so "PROOF" from 2000 doesnt mean silver..... thats what i've found out. |
Re: Any news on the dollar coins?
j-son...
The only silver Kennedy halves I'm aware of are 90% '64's, 40% '65-'70, a few silver clads struck in error in 1971 and 1977 - both with "D"enver mint marks, and "S" mint-marked Bicentennial's struck in 1975 & 1976. |

Re: Any news on the dollar coins?
"Silver"
Kennedy Proof Half dollars Starting in 1992 the US mint began producing a limited mintage "silver" proof set. These silver proof sets were fairly expensive (compared to regular proof sets) resulting in smaller sales and lower mintages. (Often resulting in small mintings compared to regular proof sets.) Each of these silver John F. Kennedy Halves is made of 90% pure silver (just like the old U.S. silver coins). They have an "S" mintmark. "S" mint marks indicate the coin was minted at the U.S. government mint in San Francisco California. The S mint coins were not produced for regular circulation. (Only the P and D mint marks were produced for regular circulation.) |

They must be quite rare. I do know that they do 90% silver state quarters that you can get from the mint in proof sets. The 1999 set carries a nice premium. If you factor in numis value then they aren't a bad buy. The latest set is around $22 (I think) from the mint. |
Re: Any news on the dollar coins?
Listen correct me if I'm wrong but do proof sets ever go DOWN in price compared to the cost of issue? I mean assuming that the price of the PM stays within a narrow range? I am looking at these coin price mags now and I am seriously wondering if this isnt an easy kill.

Re: Any news on the dollar coins?
Yes, the prices of all US Mint products can and sometimes do go down in value compared to the issue price. I had some 1968 and 1972 proof sets which went down pretty low. Also, some of the silver commemorative dollars in the 90's fared poorly. Worst thing I bought was a prestige set, from the 1990's. Don't remember the year, but I finally dumped it last year. It really is a crap shoot. I did well with the 2004 Mint set, though.

I only buy the silver proof set, smallest production numbers of any of the mint sets, and the only one with silver in it, dime, quarter and half-dollar. Those have faired well since 1999. I am holding these until the quarters are done in 2008, then I'll set it as a complete set, unless silver is going to the moon, then I will hold. The Great Ag |
